UKCA and CE marking for electronic products on Amazon UK: post-Brexit transition rules, UK Responsible Person, UKNI marking and common mistakes.

Overview

After Brexit, the United Kingdom has its own product safety regulations for electronics. The UKCA marking (UK Conformity Assessed) will ultimately replace CE marking for the British market. However, the UK government has extended transition deadlines multiple times: until October 2027, CE-marked products continue to be accepted on the UK market provided they meet EU requirements. For Northern Ireland, the Windsor Framework applies, requiring CE marking plus the supplementary UKNI mark. Amazon.co.uk requires all sellers of electronic products to designate a UK Responsible Person.

Does this apply to my product?

This checklist applies to all electronic products sold on Amazon.co.uk: consumer electronics, chargers, power supplies, LED lighting, smart home devices, Bluetooth and WiFi accessories, power banks, cables and all products that run on electricity or generate electromagnetic fields. Both own brands and private label products must meet the requirements.

Step-by-Step Guide

Progress0/13 (0%)
1

Identify applicable UK regulations

UK regulations mirror EU directives but are standalone British laws. Identify all relevant regulations for your electronic product.

Estimated time: 1-2 days

2

UKCA vs. CE – define transition strategy

Decide whether to use CE marking during the transition period or switch to UKCA already. Also consider Northern Ireland.

Estimated time: 1-2 days

3

Carry out testing and conformity assessment

Have your electronic product tested to the relevant BS EN standards (UK-equivalent harmonised standards). For certain products, a UK Approved Body is required.

Estimated time: 3-8 weeks

4

Appoint UK Responsible Person

Non-UK manufacturers must appoint a UK Responsible Person based in the United Kingdom. This is both a legal requirement and an Amazon.co.uk obligation.

Estimated time: 1-2 weeks

5

Prepare technical documentation and UK Declaration of Conformity

Prepare the technical documentation and UK Declaration of Conformity (UK DoC). This differs from the EU Declaration of Conformity.

Estimated time: 1-2 weeks

6

Meet Amazon.co.uk compliance requirements

Amazon.co.uk has its own requirements for electronic products that may go beyond the minimum legal requirements.

Estimated time: 2-5 days

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Used CE marking only without UK Responsible Person

Consequence: Even during the CE transition period, a UK Responsible Person is mandatory. Amazon suspends listings and OPSS can impose fines or remove products from the market.

Prevention: Always appoint a UK Responsible Person with a UK address, regardless of whether you use CE or UKCA.

Used EU test reports without adaptation for UK market

Consequence: EU test reports are accepted during the transition period, but the UK DoC must reference UK Regulations (not EU directives). Lack of adaptation can lead to objections during market surveillance inspections.

Prevention: Create a separate UK DoC referencing UK Regulations and Designated Standards. Existing EU test reports can be used as evidence.

Forgot UKNI marking for Northern Ireland

Consequence: Products assessed by a UK Approved Body and sold in Northern Ireland need the UKNI mark in addition to the CE mark. Without it, placing on the market in Northern Ireland is non-compliant.

Prevention: Check whether you ship Amazon orders to Northern Ireland. If so, ensure UKNI requirements are met, or use the CE route via an EU Notified Body.

Ignored British plug requirements

Consequence: Electronic devices with EU plugs (Type C/F) must not be sold in the UK without a BS 1363-compliant plug. Amazon may remove listings, Trading Standards can seize products.

Prevention: Ensure all mains-powered devices are fitted with a BS 1363 plug (UK 3-pin) or come with a permanently integrated, tested adapter.

Misjudged transition deadlines and missed UKCA switch

Consequence: After the transition period expires (currently October 2027), only UKCA-marked products will be permitted. Those who miss the switch must stop selling until UKCA marking is completed.

Prevention: Start UKCA preparation early. Implement a dual-marking strategy (CE + UKCA) to make the transition seamless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Do I need to switch to UKCA now or is CE still sufficient?

Until October 2027, CE-marked products are accepted on the UK market provided they meet EU requirements. However, we recommend pursuing the dual-marking strategy (CE + UKCA) now to avoid bottlenecks before the deadline.

Q2What is the difference between UKCA and UKNI?

UKCA applies to Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). UKNI is a supplementary mark for Northern Ireland and is applied alongside the CE mark when a UK Approved Body was involved. EU regulations continue to apply in Northern Ireland via the Windsor Framework.

Q3Can I use my EU test reports for UKCA?

During the transition period, yes. For definitive UKCA marking, test reports should ideally come from a UKAS-accredited laboratory and reference Designated Standards (BS EN). In many cases, the technical requirements are identical.

Q4Do I need a UK Responsible Person even when using FBA?

Yes, absolutely. Amazon FBA only handles shipping, not regulatory responsibility. Every non-UK seller must appoint a UK Responsible Person – regardless of the fulfilment model.

Q5What happens if Amazon does not accept my UK Responsible Person?

Amazon may deactivate listings if the UK Responsible Person is not correctly registered. Ensure that name, full UK address and contact details are entered in Seller Central and match the information on the product.
